I know well what you talk about, I love Starcraft and many other similar RTS games, it never feels like I'm bad at them, but I always lose anyways, I must be missing something that everyone else seems to have -_-. Most of my strategy gaming time lately however has been devoted to slower SRPGs like Disgaea

I'm a huge Starcraft fan as well -- can't wait for it to come out! AoE3, AoM, and Warcraft 3 are some of the 'relatively' recent RTS games that I was into.

You know, the last RTS game I played (other than a certain beta) was Pikmin II. I think Pikmin is the best RTS yet to come out for a console :-)

I totally think an RTS written in XNA GS would be a lot of fun! After seeing Yuichi Ito demo a sample app he wrote with a BAZILLION 3D models flying around the screen at 60FPS or so, I got inspired! Of course his sample was using some very neat GPU trickery :) But man... if you know what you're doing, you can pump some SERIOUS performance out of the Xbox using XNA GS. A RTS with those techniques would be awesome.

I for some reason never got around to playing starcraft, but I played the heck out of some warcraft 3. More recently, I played age of empires for a while.

I casually played some of the lord of the rings RTS games to check out their concept of individual unit bravery/fear ... the idea that some weaker units will run away or become weaker if their squad leader was defeated. It was kind of interesting, I liked that they were at least trying to change up the formula a little bit. It was also the first game that proved that you could make a good RTS for a console (ignoring the fact of course that Dune 2: battle for arrakis was released on the genesis over 10 years ago) :-P

I'm surprised I haven't seen more XNA RTSs ...
