What the heck is XNA doing?
So what is XNA doing? That is a question that I seem to be getting a lot nowadays.
Unfortunatly, I can’t give as much details as I would like to, but once we have some sort of beta out in the wild, expect to see a lot of tutorials and samples on how to use our technology posted on this blog! I can’t wait to start them.
So, back to the question of the day: What is XNA?
XNA’s mission is to revolutionalize the way people make games today. It is no secret that:
- Games take too long and are too expensive to make today. XNA is building tools and technologies that will help a lot in this area. We haven’t announced much of what those tools are, but we did release a tech preivew of one of them, the XNA Build system. You can grab that from http://www.microsoft.com/xna along with the entire source code for Mech Commander 2 game that builds within it!
- Games are hard to write. Direct X is not easy to use. We are set out to change that as well. We want everyone that is interested in creating games be able to do so. We started down that path already with Managed Direct X 1.1. XNA framework is the follow up to MDX. This allows you to game developers to write games using C#.
Now, why am I excited about XNA? I myself have never developed a game before or used Direct X. It was always a very mysterious space to me. But having started working for this team, I began messing around with our XNA framework and in no time was able to write a 3D renderer. That is what I plan to walk you through creating when we release a beta of our bits.
So stay tuned for some really cool stuff from Microsoft’s XNA team!
